Book description

Oklahoma. The land is brittle, the dust relentless. For the women of the Hemmings family, simply surviving demands a strength they didn’t know they possessed, and a reckoning with secrets buried deep within their history. Evelyn, the matriarch, carries the weight of years and choices made. Her daughter, Clara, fights to keep the family afloat as the world around them cracks. Decades later, Evelyn’s granddaughter, Rose, inherits a farm haunted by unanswered questions.

This is a story about the quiet courage found in ordinary lives, the enduring bonds between mothers and daughters, and the way the past shapes everything that follows. Rose’s search for answers will lead her through faded ledgers, letters carried across oceans, and a revelation that will change her understanding of everything she thought she knew about her family’s legacy.

Look inside

Dust and Whispers: Black Sunday | Cracked Earth

The dust came first, a low, ochre stain on the horizon. Old Man Tiber, he used to say it wasn’t dust at all, but the earth remembering what it lost. Said the land held onto stories, clinging to every root and stone, and sometimes, when the wind blew just right, it breathed them back out. Most folks dismissed him as senile, but I always felt a shiver run down my spine when he spoke. There was a weight to this land, a history buried deep that even the harshest sun couldn't quite bake away.

The farm, what was left of it, wasn’t much to look at. A weathered farmhouse, paint peeling like sunburnt skin, a barn with half its roof gone, and fields…fields that had once promised plenty but now offered only cracked earth and despair. It wasn’t a grand place, never had been. But it was home. It had been home to my mother, and her mother before her, women who’d coaxed life from this stubborn soil for generations.

The smell of coffee, weak but warm, filled the kitchen. Elara, my grandmother, sat at the table, her hands gnarled with age and work wrapped around a chipped mug. She didn't say much these days, mostly just watched the dust swirl outside the window. Her eyes, the color of faded denim, held a sadness that seemed as old as the land itself.

“Another one coming, I reckon,” she said, her voice raspy, barely a whisper.

I glanced at the sky. The color wasn’t right. A bruised purple hung heavy, pressing down on everything. “Just a storm, Gran?”

She shook her head slowly. “Not rain. This feels different.”

I tried to brush off her apprehension. We’d had storms before, plenty of them. But the Dust Bowl was changing everything. Farms were failing, families were leaving, and the hope that had once bloomed so brightly was withering away. I was twenty-two, and already I felt the weight of it all, the pressure to hold onto something that seemed to be slipping through my fingers.

“We’ll be alright,” I said, more for my own benefit than hers. “We always are.”

She looked at me, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. “Don't you be so sure, Wren. Some things…some things are beyond fixing.”

My mother, Clara, was in the garden, trying to salvage what she could. She wore a faded cotton dress and a wide-brimmed hat, but even that couldn’t protect her from the grit that coated everything. She painted, mostly. Landscapes, portraits of the people in Havenwood, anything to capture a bit of beauty in this desolate place. She said it was her way of fighting back, of refusing to let the dust win.

I walked out to join her, the dry earth crunching under my boots. “Anything growing?”

She smiled, a small, tired smile. “A few beans. A stubborn tomato plant. It’s a miracle, really.”

She was sketching in a small notebook, her hand moving quickly and gracefully. I leaned over her shoulder and saw a drawing of the farmhouse, silhouetted against the darkening sky. It wasn’t just a picture of a building. It was a portrait of resilience, of a family clinging to their roots.

“It’s beautiful, Mama.”

“It’s just a house, Wren.” She sighed. “A house filled with memories.”

“And hope,” I added.

She didn’t respond, her gaze drifting back to the approaching storm. I knew she was worried. We all were. But she had a quiet strength, a determination that I admired. She’d always been the heart of our family, the one who held us together.

The town of Havenwood was small, barely a speck on the map. A general store, a church, a schoolhouse, and a handful of houses clustered around a dusty main street. Everyone knew everyone else's business, and gossip spread faster than the dust ...
