Silent Sparks
The first rule of Aethel is simple. Do not feel too loud.
Lyra Voss broke it before breakfast.
She was running again. Not because anything chased her. Nothing chased anyone in Grey District. Nothing that interesting ever happened there. She ran because her legs wanted to, because the cold air felt good in her lungs, because the grey streets were empty at this hour and the whole dumb colorless city was hers alone.
Her boots slapped the wet stone. Her breath puffed white. And under her skin, right behind her ribs, something warm flickered and curled like a cat waking up.
Not now, she told it. Seriously. Not. Now.
It flickered brighter.
"Fine," she gasped, rounding the corner of Kettle Lane. "One spark. A tiny one. Then we're done."
She held out her hand as she ran. A little ball of orange light popped into her palm, warm as a mug of tea, and it bobbed along beside her for three whole seconds before she crushed it into nothing.
Three seconds of orange. In a district where the brightest thing most days was a rust stain.
It was the best part of her morning. It was also, if anyone had seen it, a fine of thirty marks and a mark on her record. The third mark on her record, actually.
She was counting.
The flat smelled like cabbage soup. It always smelled like cabbage soup. The pipes in the walls tasted faintly of rust, and the one window looked out at a wall, which looked out at another wall, and so on until the edge of the platform.
"You're damp," said her mother, without looking up from the pot.
"It's misting."
"You're damp because you run in it. Sit down. Eat."
Lyra sat. The soup was grey. Everything in her life was grey. She stirred it and watched the steam rise and tried very hard to think about nothing, because thinking about things made the warmth under her ribs stir, and the warmth under her ribs made light, and light made fines.
Her mother ladled out a bowl for herself and sat down across the table. They ate in silence. Not angry silence. Just the normal kind. The Aethel kind.
"Seventeen today," her mother said at last.
"Yep."
"Seventeenth birthday means assessment season."
"Yep."
"And the examiners look at conduct records first. Before anything else." Her mother's spoon tapped the edge of the bowl. Once. Twice. "Three marks, Lyr."
"Two," Lyra said. "One of those was a misunderstanding."
"You lit a busker's hat on fire."
"He smiled! First smile on that corner in months. I should have gotten a medal."
Her mother closed her eyes. She did that a lot. Like she was counting to some number that was always just out of reach.
"The law isn't about harm," she said quietly. "You know the law. Echoes are weather. Uncontrolled weather kills. The Silence keeps us safe."
"I know the saying, Ma. I've had it stitched on every pillow in school since I was six."
"Then act like it."
Lyra shoved a spoonful of soup in her mouth to keep from answering. The warmth behind her ribs pressed, curious, like it was listening too. She pictured a grey blanket and threw it over the feeling. Smother it. Sit on it. Pretend it's not there.
That was the whole trick to life in Aethel. That was the whole curriculum. Twelve years of school, and it all boiled down to one skill: the ability to have feelings and hide them so well even you forgot where you put them.
She was, by every measure, very bad at this.
"There's bread for your run later," her mother said, softer. "In the tin. Don't run past the Hollow today. They posted Wardens there this morning."
Lyra paused. "Wardens? In the Hollow? Why?"
"Someone bloomed there last night. Full bloom, right in ...
