Look inside

Dust and Echoes

The sensor wash stuttered, spitting static across the viewport. Lyra cursed, slapping the console. Another dead zone in the K’tharr nebula. Beautiful, yes, all swirling amethyst and bruised purple, but a graveyard for comms and a magnet for pirate scum. Perfect for her line of work.

“Come on, you stubborn piece of junk,” she muttered, working a diagnostics panel with practiced ease. The Sparrowhawk wasn’t pretty. Salvaged hull plating, mismatched engine components, and a cockpit that smelled permanently of recycled air and desperation. But she knew every groan and shudder of the old freighter, and it had kept her alive long enough.

Her current target: the Stardust, a luxury liner that had vanished six months ago, swallowed by the nebula. Rumor had it she’d been carrying a shipment of pre-Concord artifacts. Rich people's trinkets, mostly, but sometimes… sometimes there was something truly valuable. Something worth the risk.

The sensor flickered back to life, displaying a faint, fragmented signal. Lyra leaned forward, her breath catching. “There. Just a ghost, but a ghost nonetheless.”

The Stardust wasn't whole. More like scattered bones. The nebula had ripped her apart, leaving debris spread across a five-kilometer radius. A scavenger’s dream. Or a nightmare, depending on who got there first.

“Alright, Sparrowhawk, let’s earn our keep.”

The boarding tube hissed as it connected to a large section of the Stardust’s hull. Lyra moved with a fluid grace born of years spent navigating zero-g wreckage. Her suit’s magnetic boots clicked softly against the metal. The interior was a mess of twisted metal, sparking wires, and floating debris. The opulent décor, velvet seating, polished chrome, holographic art, was eerily preserved, a macabre reminder of the lives lost.

“Luxury liner, huh?” she said into her comm, her voice echoing in the cavernous space. “More like a floating tomb.”

She activated her scanner, sweeping for life signs. Nothing. Not even the faint trace of emergency beacons. The entire crew and passengers had been… erased.

The air was stale, thick with the metallic tang of blood and the faint, cloying sweetness of decay. Lyra ignored it, focusing on her task. She moved quickly, systematically searching the cargo holds. Mostly datapads and personal belongings. Useless.

“Anything?” a voice crackled in her ear. It was Kael, her occasional fence and reluctant source of information. He monitored the comm channels, keeping an eye out for rivals and Concord patrols.

“Just a lot of broken dreams and overpriced luggage,” Lyra replied. “Starting to think this was a wild goose chase.”

“Don’t give up yet. The rumors were persistent. Someone believed the Stardust had something special.”

Lyra sighed. Kael had a knack for getting under her skin. He always played the long game, dangling information like bait. “Yeah, well, rumors also said I was a prodigy pilot. Turns out I’m just good at not crashing.”

“Modesty doesn’t suit you, Sparrow.”

“Neither does unsolicited commentary.”

She pushed further into the wreckage, ignoring Kael’s smug silence. She reached what had been the ship’s observation lounge. The panoramic viewport was shattered, offering a dizzying view of the nebula. A single, ornate chair sat before the broken glass, as if someone had been enjoying the view when disaster struck.

Lyra ran a scan around the chair. A faint energy signature. Unusual. She knelt, carefully peeling back a section of damaged paneling. Behind it, she found a small, hidden compartment. Inside, nestled in protective foam, was a data core. Roughly spherical, made of a dark, obsidian-like material she’d never seen before. It pulsed with a faint, internal light.

“Kael,” she said, her voice suddenly tight. “I think I found something.”

“Took you long enough. What is it?”

“A data core. Old tech. Definitely not Concord standard. And… it feels different. Like it’s… alive.”

“Alive?” Kael scoffed. “You’ve been breathing too much recycled air, Sparrow.”

“Just listen. The energy signature is complex. Multi-layered. And it's emitting a low-frequency ...
