Book description
Maya thought she knew Chloe. One moment her friend was online, the next, gone without a trace. All that remains is a fractured final message, and a scattering of digital breadcrumbs.
This isn’t a case for the police; it’s a desperate search for someone who speaks the language of the internet. Maya dives into the hidden corners of the digital world, following a signal through encrypted chats, anonymous streams, and compromised accounts. The deeper she goes, the more dangerous the truth becomes, a conspiracy that reaches beyond her small town and threatens everything she believed.
Prepare for a mystery where the digital world is the investigation, and every click could be a step closer to the truth…or a fatal mistake.

The screen pulsed with color. Kai, or Nightshade as everyone online knew him, was on. Another livestream. Another thousand viewers already flooding the chat with fire emojis and questions. He was a natural. Smooth talking, quick reflexes in the game he was playing, some fast-paced shooter thing Hana didn’t even try to follow, and a smile that reached his eyes.
“Yo, Nightshades! What’s good?” he asked, voice booming through the speakers. The chat exploded.
Hana sat hunched at her desk, headphones on, pretending to code. Really, she was just watching him. It wasn’t that she wasn’t proud. She was. Kai was amazing. It was just…loud. All of it. And public. She preferred the quiet hum of her computer, the neat lines of code, the feeling of control.
“We got a new follower alert!” Kai announced, reading a username. “PixelDust77! Welcome to the Shade Zone!”
Hana glanced at her own screen. A jumbled mess of Python. She was trying to debug a program for their mom’s small online plant shop, but her brain felt fried just from being in the same room as Kai’s energy.
“Anyone seen that weird thread going around?” Kai asked suddenly, his tone shifting, losing some of the playful edge. “About…Ascension?”
Hana’s fingers froze over the keyboard. That word. She’d seen it too. A whisper here, a fleeting comment there. A weird challenge. Something about…self-improvement? It felt wrong.
“Ascension? What’s that?” someone typed in the chat.
“Just some weird stuff people are posting,” Kai said, skillfully navigating the game while responding. “Supposedly, it’s a series of tests. Push yourself to the limit. Unlock your…potential, or whatever.” He made air quotes with his fingers. “Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.”
“Sounds intense,” another viewer wrote. “Like, actually intense.”
“Exactly,” Kai replied. “Probably just some bored people trying to get views. Don’t even bother.” He laughed, but Hana noticed his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes this time. There was a tightness around his mouth.
“You looking into it?” a voice asked in Hana’s ear. It was Leo Maxwell, her classmate. He’d somehow managed to materialize behind her, leaning over her shoulder. Leo was obsessed with true crime. Podcasts, documentaries, the whole thing. He always seemed to show up when Kai was streaming.
“Just listening,” Hana mumbled, trying to block him out.
“He mentioned Ascension. That’s the thing I’ve been reading about,” Leo said, his voice hushed. “It’s…strange. Supposedly, it's this online community promising radical self-improvement, but the ‘tests’ are getting increasingly extreme.”
“Extreme how?”
“Stuff like staying awake for days, pushing physical limits, social isolation…things that could actually be dangerous. There’s a lot of secrecy around it. Encrypted chats, burner accounts. It’s like they're trying to stay hidden.”
Hana shivered. That’s what she’d sensed. Something off.
The stream ended with a flurry of goodbyes and a promise to be back tomorrow. Kai leaned back in his chair, finally relaxing. He ran a hand through his dark hair, looking exhausted.
“You okay?” Hana asked, surprising herself. She rarely initiated conversations with him.
“Yeah, just a long day,” he said, giving her a tired smile. “That Ascension stuff is creeping me out, though. It’s popping up everywhere. I just…I don’t want anyone getting hurt.”
“Leo thinks it’s dangerous,” Hana said, relaying what he’d told her.
Kai frowned. “Leo? The true crime guy?”
“He does his research.”
“I know, I know.” Kai sighed. “It’s just…I don’t want to give it too much attention. Shining a light on it could make it worse.”
“But ignoring it could be worse too,” Hana argued, surprised by the conviction in her own voice.
Kai looked at her, really looked at her. He knew she wasn't normally this outspoken. “You’re right,” he admitted. “It’s just…I feel like I have to protect people, you know? And sometimes, the best way to do that is to not draw attention to the bad stuff.”
