Empty Rooms: The Drive In | Dust and Memories
The chipped porcelain mug warmed Eleanor’s hands, but did little for the chill that had settled deep within her. Steam curled from the lukewarm tea, carrying a faint scent of chamomile, a fragrance that used to soothe. Now, it just reminded her of quiet evenings spent with Daniel, evenings that felt impossibly distant. She hadn’t bothered to add honey. Sweetness felt…wrong.
She glanced at the rearview mirror, checking the packed car one last time. Boxes overflowed with carefully wrapped memories, photo albums, Daniel’s worn leather armchair, a collection of antique maps he’d loved. Everything felt heavy, weighted with the ghost of his presence. She hadn’t even managed a proper clear-out, just a sorting, a boxing, an attempt to contain the fragments of a life she no longer knew how to live.
Leaving Boston had been the hardest decision of her life, but staying felt worse. Every corner of their brownstone held a memory, a laugh, a shared dream that now lay shattered. The city itself felt like a constant ache, a reminder of everything she'd lost. She needed space, she told herself. Distance. A place where the echoes of Daniel wouldn’t follow her every step.
Her fingers tightened around the mug. Maine. Havenwood, Maine. A place she’d stumbled across during a late-night internet search, a tiny coastal town promising lavender fields and a slower pace of life. A Victorian house, desperately in need of repair, offered a tangible project, a distraction. A purpose, maybe.
She took a final sip of tea, the taste bitter on her tongue. "Okay, Daniel," she whispered to the empty car. "Here goes."
The highway unrolled before her, a grey ribbon winding through the changing landscape. Boston’s brick and steel gradually gave way to rolling hills, then dense forests. The air, once thick with city grime, began to smell of pine and salt. Eleanor lowered the window, letting the cool breeze ruffle her hair. It felt…good. A small, hesitant lifting of the weight on her chest.
She'd driven for nearly five hours, fueled by coffee and a stubborn refusal to dwell on the past. She'd meticulously planned the route, avoiding major interstates in favor of scenic backroads. She wanted to see the country, to feel the miles melt away, to somehow outrun the grief that clung to her like a shadow.
The GPS guided her towards the coast, and soon, glimpses of the ocean appeared between the trees. A shimmering expanse of blue, stretching towards the horizon. She hadn't realized how much she'd missed the sea. Daniel had always preferred the mountains, but she'd grown up near the coast, spending summers building sandcastles and collecting seashells.
A wave of nostalgia washed over her, quickly followed by a familiar pang of sadness. She blinked back tears, focusing on the road ahead. No looking back. Just forward.
Havenwood appeared unexpectedly, nestled between a rocky shoreline and a field of vibrant purple. Lavender, stretching as far as the eye could see, perfumed the air with its delicate fragrance. It was…beautiful. Unexpectedly so.
The town itself was small, a cluster of weathered clapboard houses, quaint shops, and a charming harbor filled with fishing boats. It looked like something from a postcard, a step back in time. A hand-painted sign welcomed visitors: “Havenwood: Where Time Slows Down.”
Eleanor slowed the car as she entered the town, taking it all in. It was everything she’d hoped for, and yet…a strange sense of unease settled over her. The quiet was almost deafening, the stillness unsettling. It felt like everyone knew everyone else, and she, an outsider, was immediately noticeable.
She found the house easily enough, following the directions she’d printed out. It stood on a slight rise overlooking the lavender fields, a grand Victorian with peeling paint, overgrown ivy, and a general air of neglect. It was magnificent, in a crumbling sort of way.
“Well,” she murmured ...
