The Empty Clinic
The late summer sun beat down on Seabrook, making the air shimmer above the harbor. It was the kind of heat that made you want to do nothing but sit in the shade with a tall glass of lemonade. But Leo Maxwell had a job to do. A very important job. He checked the list in his hand, making sure he hadn’t forgotten anything. Flashlight? Check. Notebook? Check. Extra-strong dog treats (just in case)? Double check.
He adjusted the strap of his backpack and glanced at his friends, Maya Rodriguez, Samir “Sam” Kapoor, and Chloe Bellweather, as they walked alongside him. They were headed to Dr. Finch’s animal clinic, a cozy little building painted a cheerful blue, right near the docks.
“You sure you need all that stuff, Leo?” Chloe asked, fanning herself with her hand. “It’s just a check-up for Buster. He’s probably just being dramatic, like always.”
Buster was Chloe’s fluffy white Samoyed, a giant ball of fur who considered every minor sniffle a full-blown medical emergency.
“It’s not just Buster, Chloe,” Leo said, his voice serious. “Dr. Finch said he was feeling overwhelmed with all the sick animals coming in because of the heat. We promised we’d help out however we could.”
Maya, who was walking quietly beside him, nodded. She was looking out at the water, her eyes scanning the boats. She always seemed to be extra aware of everything around her, especially when animals were involved.
“I can already feel it,” Maya murmured, her brow furrowing. “Something feels…off.”
Sam, fiddling with a small device in his hand, looked up. “Off? Like what, Maya? You sensing a surge in animal anxiety levels?” He held up his gadget. “My bio-monitor isn’t picking up anything unusual.”
“It’s not something a machine can measure, Sam,” Maya replied, a little defensively. “It’s just…a feeling.”
Leo, despite his need for organization, understood Maya. She had a way with animals, a connection that went beyond just being kind to them. He knew she often sensed things others missed.
“Let’s just see what’s going on at the clinic,” he said, quickening their pace. “That’s the best way to figure things out.”
The clinic usually buzzed with activity. The waiting room always smelled like antiseptic and happy pets, a mix of fur, wet noses, and hopeful wagging tails. Today, though, it was…silent. Eerily silent.
The front door was unlocked, which was strange. Dr. Finch always locked up, even if he was just stepping into the back for a moment.
“That’s weird,” Chloe said, her voice echoing in the empty space. “Dr. Finch is super careful about locking up.”
Leo cautiously pushed the door open wider and stepped inside, the others close behind him. The waiting room was empty. No pets, no owners, no Dr. Finch. A single fan whirred weakly in the corner, doing little to stir the hot, still air.
“Dr. Finch?” Leo called out, his voice louder this time. “Hello?”
Only the fan answered.
Sam immediately started scanning the room with his device. “No signs of forced entry. The security system appears to be disarmed, but there’s no record of anyone entering or leaving in the last hour.”
“Maybe he just stepped out for a quick errand?” Chloe suggested, though she didn't sound convinced.
Maya was already moving, her eyes darting around the room, her hands outstretched as if she were feeling for something. She walked towards the examination room, pausing at the doorway.
“Something’s definitely wrong,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I can feel it. A lot of worry. And…sadness.”
Leo followed her into the examination room. It was even more unsettling than the waiting room. An open bottle of antiseptic lay on the counter, and a half-finished chart sat on the table, detailing the symptoms of a golden retriever named Gus. But Gus wasn’t there. Neither was Dr. Finch.
“He wouldn’t just leave a patient ...
