Book description

Ava picked Port Blossom because nobody there knew her name. A foggy little town on the coast seemed like the perfect place to stop running.

She hadn't counted on Clara. Decades ago, a woman named Clara was murdered here, and the case was never closed. The more Ava hears about her, the harder it is to let go, and the more certain people in town want her to. Sheriff Caleb is steady, guarded and hard to read, and Ava can't decide whether he's an ally or another obstacle. As the two of them get closer to each other and to the answer, the warnings get harder to ignore, until Ava starts to wonder whether she's the one investigating or the one being hunted.

Salt and Stone is atmospheric, tense romantic suspense with a strong heroine, a slow-building love story and a mystery that keeps tightening. It balances danger with heart, and it asks Ava the question she came here to avoid: keep running from her past, or finally face it.

For readers who like their romance with fog, salt air and a real threat in the shadows. The book also includes a handful of illustrations.

Look inside

Arrival: The Fog Descends

The scent of turpentine and linseed oil hung heavy in the studio, a sharp, chemical contrast to the damp, salt-laden air pressing against the glass. Outside, Port Blossom was vanishing. The fog had rolled in just after dusk, a thick, grey blanket that erased the rocky shoreline and swallowed the lighthouse beam until only a dull, pulsing glow remained.

Ava Thorne stood before the canvas, her brush poised in mid-air. Her hand trembled, just a fraction. She stared at the landscape taking shape before her. It was not the serene, postcard view the locals boasted about in the town brochures. This was something else entirely. She had painted the jagged teeth of the cliffs, the churning, angry water, and the way the light seemed to die before it hit the rocks. It felt raw. It felt like a warning.

She stepped back, wiping her hands on a rag stained with ochre and deep indigo. The silence in the house was profound. It was an old house, a Victorian relic perched precariously on a cliff edge, and it had a way of settling at night. The wood groaned under the temperature drop. The wind whistled through gaps in the window frames. Ava usually found comfort in these sounds, but tonight, they felt intrusive.

She glanced at the grandfather clock in the corner. Midnight. She should have been asleep hours ago, but the painting demanded completion. The composition felt wrong, missing a focal point. She moved to the window, peering into the gloom. The fog was so dense she could barely see the porch light.

A sound drifted up from the lower floor.

It was not the house settling. It was the distinct, rhythmic scrape of wood against stone. Her front door.

Ava froze. She lived alone. She had moved to Port Blossom to escape, to be alone, to find a quiet corner of the world where her past could not follow. Her isolation was her armor. She did not entertain guests at this hour.

She set her brush down on the table. The clatter seemed deafening in the quiet room. She took a breath, trying to slow the sudden, frantic thrumming in her chest. Perhaps it was a branch. The storm was picking up, and the ancient oaks around the property were shedding limbs like leaves.

She walked to the studio door, her heart hammering against her ribs. She moved with a practiced stillness, a habit formed long before she arrived in Maine. She reached the hallway and listened.

Silence returned, heavier than before.

She took a step down the stairs, the wood planks cold beneath her bare feet. The house felt different tonight. The shadows in the hallway seemed to stretch, reaching for her. She reached the landing and peered into the living room. Everything was as she had left it. The fire had burned down to embers, casting a faint, dying orange glow across the room.

She let out a breath she had not realized she was holding. She was spiraling. She was reacting to ghosts, to memories she had spent years trying to bury. There was no one here.

She turned to go back upstairs, her resolve hardening. She was letting her fear dictate her life again, and she would not allow it. She reached for the banister, her fingers curling around the polished wood.

A soft click echoed through the living room. It was the sound of a latch sliding into place.

The front door. It had been locked. She knew she had locked it.

Ava spun around. The living room was empty, yet the air shifted. The temperature plummeted. A draft flowed through the space, carrying the smell of brine and something else. Metallic. Sharp.

Who is there? She asked, her voice barely a whisper. She hated how small it sounded.

No answer came. Only the low moan of the wind outside.

She backed away, toward ...
