The Missing Sparkle
The scent of salt air and blooming hydrangeas drifted through the open windows of the Rosewood Retirement Village community room. It was the day of the annual craft fair, and a cheerful buzz filled the space. Tables draped in colorful cloths showcased handmade treasures, knitted scarves, painted watercolors, jars of local honey, and meticulously crafted wooden toys. Eleanor Swift, perched on a stool near the entrance, surveyed the scene with a contented smile.
She’d only been retired from her position as Havenwood’s librarian for a little over a year, but Rosewood already felt like home. It wasn’t just the comfortable cottage she’d decorated with her beloved books, or the convenient access to the tea room. It was the people. A genuine warmth radiated from the residents, a sense of shared history and easy companionship.
“Eleanor, dear, you’re looking lovely,” a voice boomed beside her.
Eleanor turned to see Bea Abernathy, a whirlwind of energy in a bright floral dress, bustling toward her. Bea had been a journalist for the Havenwood Gazette for decades, and hadn't lost her knack for getting to the heart of things.
“And you’re looking like you’re about to single-handedly run this fair, Bea,” Eleanor chuckled. “Need a hand?”
“Oh, just keeping an eye on things. Making sure everything runs smoothly. You know how these events can be,” Bea said with a wink. “Though honestly, it's more about the gossip than the crafts. Did you hear about Mrs. Gable’s cat? Apparently, it’s taken a liking to Mr. Henderson’s prize-winning petunias.”
Eleanor laughed. “Rosewood is never dull, is it?”
“Never,” Bea agreed. “Speaking of not dull, have you seen Vivian Sterling’s contribution? It’s… striking.”
Bea gestured towards a table near the back, where Vivian Sterling, the new owner of Rosewood’s tea room, had displayed her wares. Vivian was a recent arrival, and quite the contrast to the established residents. She favored sleek, modern clothing and an air of sophisticated distance. Her offering, a collection of antique jewelry, stood out amongst the homespun crafts.
“It is rather lovely,” Eleanor admitted, observing a delicate silver brooch shaped like a hummingbird, its wings inlaid with tiny, glittering stones. “A bit pricey for a village craft fair, perhaps?”
“Pricey is an understatement. But she insists it’s a genuine antique. Claims it belonged to her grandmother. I've tried to ask a few questions about it, but she’s tighter-lipped than a clam.”
Just then, Art Penhaligon, a retired history professor, joined them, peering at the craft displays through thick spectacles. Art was a walking encyclopedia, always ready to share a historical tidbit or correct a factual inaccuracy.
“Fascinating,” he murmured, examining a hand-carved wooden bird. “The craftsmanship is reminiscent of the Scandinavian folk art tradition of the 18th century. Though the wood itself appears to be locally sourced pine. An interesting combination.”
“You always have a story to go with everything, Art,” Eleanor said with affection.
“It’s what I do, my dear. Context is everything.” He adjusted his glasses. “Have you seen the jewelry, though? That brooch is quite remarkable. A Victorian piece, I believe, possibly dating back to the late 1860s. The filigree work is exquisite.”
“Bea thinks it’s a bit much for a craft fair,” Eleanor said.
“Well, it is rather extravagant,” Millie Hawthorne chimed in, joining the group with a plate of freshly baked cookies. Millie, a former seamstress, possessed a quiet practicality and an uncanny ability to notice everything.
“I helped Vivian set up her table earlier,” Millie continued, offering the plate around. “She was very particular about the placement of each piece. Seemed awfully nervous about someone touching anything.”
“Nervous, you say?” Bea’s journalistic instincts were piqued. “That’s interesting.”
“She’s just protective of her merchandise, I expect,” Eleanor said, taking a cookie. “It is valuable, after all.”
“Perhaps,” Bea said, her eyes twinkling. “Or perhaps there’s more to the story.”
