Book description
Blackwood Park feels different lately. For tech-loving twins Leo and Maya, it’s always been a place for exploration, but now odd glitches appear on their devices, and whispers of a forgotten past begin to surface. Something is hidden within the park, connected to the town’s oldest family, the Blackwoods.
As they investigate using augmented reality, the twins find clues left by someone long gone. It’s more than a puzzle; it's a chance to give voice to those who’ve been silenced. But someone wants the truth to stay buried, and Leo and Maya are soon racing against time, shadowed by a mysterious figure.

Look inside
Glitches
The screen flickered, showing the familiar, cartoonish map of Havenwood. Leo Maxwell tapped the screen, bringing up the AR view. The park, usually just grass and trees, bloomed with digital fireflies and shimmering information tags. That was the point of ‘Echo’, layering a digital world over the real one. It was Havenwood’s big thing. Everyone used it.
He was hunting for the weekly ‘Echo’ challenge: hidden digital coins scattered around town. It was supposed to be a relaxing Friday afternoon. It wasn’t working out that way.
“Ugh, seriously?” Leo muttered, adjusting the tablet. “Another coin stuck on Old Man Hemlock’s mailbox? That guy hates people.”
He was sitting on the steps of the Havenwood Library, the cool stone warm under him. The library smelled like old paper and quiet. Not his favorite, but a good spot to connect to the library’s Wi-Fi and boost the ‘Echo’ signal. He needed all the signal he could get. Havenwood, despite being obsessed with the app, had surprisingly spotty coverage.
“What’s up?” Maya Rodriguez plopped down beside him, her backpack overflowing with books. She always had books.
“Just this stupid coin. And ‘Echo’ is being glitchy. Keeps freezing.”
Maya peered at his screen. “Let me see. Maybe you need to restart the app?”
Leo shook his head. “Already tried. It's not a crash. It's… weird.” He tapped again, aiming the tablet at Blackwood Manor, a dark shape looming on the hill overlooking the town. The manor was abandoned, everyone said haunted. Perfect ‘Echo’ fodder. Usually.
Instead of the detailed 3D model of the manor that ‘Echo’ normally displayed, the image shimmered, distorted like a bad TV signal. Sections of the building flickered, replaced by static. Then, just as quickly, it snapped back to normal.
“Whoa,” Maya breathed. “Did you see that?”
“Yeah. It just… glitched. I thought it was my connection.”
“That wasn't a connection problem. That was different.” Maya, who knew everything about Havenwood’s history, straightened up. “Blackwood Manor doesn’t usually do that. ‘Echo’ has a super detailed model. It’s one of the most popular AR hotspots.”
“Maybe the model’s corrupted?” Leo suggested, even though he knew that wasn't likely. The app developers were meticulous.
He tried again, focusing on the manor. This time, the glitch was worse. The static wasn't just replacing sections of the building; it was bending the image, twisting the stone walls and gothic windows into something alien. And for a split second, Leo thought he saw a figure in one of the windows. A shadowy shape, moving too quickly to be real.
“Okay, that’s officially creepy,” he said, lowering the tablet.
Maya grabbed his arm. “Look!”
The glitch had settled, but something was still off. A single window, on the highest tower, was displaying a strange symbol. It wasn’t part of the original ‘Echo’ model. It looked like… a gear, intersected by a lightning bolt.
“That wasn’t there before,” Maya said, her voice hushed. “I’ve spent hours exploring Blackwood Manor on ‘Echo’. I would have noticed that.”
Samir ‘Sam’ Khan was sketching in the park, headphones blasting a low, pulsing beat. He wasn't really in the park. He was inside his head, translating the world into shapes and colors. The park’s AR hotspots were fun, but mostly just distractions. He preferred the real thing. Real light, real shadows, real textures.
Chloe Baker, predictably, was attempting to beat the park’s ‘Echo’ obstacle course, a digital maze projected onto the walking path. She was already on her third try, narrowly avoiding a virtual laser grid.
“Almost… got it!” she yelled, weaving around a digital pillar. She tripped, landing with a thump.
“Graceful as always,” Sam said, not looking up from his sketchbook.
“Shut up, Sam!” Chloe scrambled to her feet, brushing off her jeans. “It’s harder than it looks!”
“Everything is, when you run into it blindly,” Sam said, sketching a quick line.
Chloe rolled her eyes. ...
