Look inside

Inheritance: The House on the Cliff

The solicitor’s office smelled of old paper and a quiet sadness. Eleanor traced the pattern of the floral carpet with her shoe, avoiding her sister’s gaze. Olivia, always impeccably dressed, even for a difficult day, sat straight, her expression unreadable. Eleanor felt the familiar distance between them, a gap that had grown over years of unspoken feelings.

“So,” Mr. Abernathy said, adjusting his glasses, “as your mother’s will states, Blackwood House and everything in it is to be divided equally between you.”

Equally. The word felt heavy. Eleanor hadn't expected kindness from a woman who gave affection sparingly. She’d prepared for a disagreement, for a clause favoring Olivia, the favored child. Instead, it was…just a house. A crumbling, isolated house on the Maine coast she hadn’t seen since she was a teenager.

Olivia cleared her throat. “And the…maps?”

Mr. Abernathy checked his papers. “Ah, yes. The maps are specifically mentioned. Your mother asked that they stay with the house, to be ‘shared and understood’ by both of you.” A slight emphasis on ‘both.’ Eleanor knew her mother’s subtle ways well.

“Shared?” Olivia’s voice was clipped. “What maps?”

“Your mother collected them,” Mr. Abernathy explained. “Antique maps, mostly. Nautical charts, some local…and a few hand-drawn pieces. A lifelong interest, it seems.”

Eleanor remembered glimpses of rolled-up parchment in the attic, dismissed as clutter. Her mother always kept that part of her life private, another locked room in a house full of them.

“I didn’t know about any maps,” Olivia said, her tone cool.

“Perhaps your mother didn’t mention them,” Mr. Abernathy offered gently. “She was a private woman.”

Eleanor felt a prickle of annoyance. Private? She was secretive, emotionally distant, and often…reserved. But Olivia, always diplomatic, simply nodded. Eleanor, however, felt a growing unease. What had her mother been collecting? And why these maps?

“The house is ready for you to view whenever you’re ready,” Mr. Abernathy said, closing the file. “Here are the keys.” He handed Olivia a heavy brass keyring. Olivia took them without a word, her fingers tightening around the metal.

The drive to Blackwood House was under a grey sky. Grey sea, grey rocks along the coast. The house appeared, a dark Victorian shape against the restless ocean. It was larger than Eleanor remembered, three stories with peeling paint and climbing ivy. It felt less like a home and more like a lonely watchman, guarding secrets from the waves.

Olivia parked the car, and they stood for a moment, facing the house.

“It’s…worse than I remembered,” Eleanor said, stating the obvious.

“It needs work,” Olivia replied, her voice practical. “A lot of work.”

Eleanor sensed the familiar way Olivia assessed things. Olivia was a realtor, a fixer-upper. She saw potential in everything, a price tag under every layer of dust. Eleanor, an architect, saw the beauty in a building’s structure, but this house felt…troubled.

“Do you remember the gardens?” Eleanor asked, hoping for a shared memory.

Olivia shook her head. “I wasn’t interested in gardens.”

Of course not. Olivia had been busy with riding lessons and parties. Eleanor had wandered the grounds alone, sketching in a notepad, losing herself in the wild coastline. She’d felt a strange connection to the house then, a sense of belonging she hadn’t found elsewhere.

Now, the gardens were overgrown with weeds and tangled bushes. The rose bushes, once carefully pruned by her mother, were choked with thorns.

Olivia unlocked the front door, and a gust of damp air rushed out, carrying the scent of salt and decay. The interior was dim and dusty, filled with antique furniture covered in white sheets. Dust motes danced in the weak light from the windows.

“Goodness,” Olivia said, wrinkling her nose. “It smells…old.”

Eleanor ignored the comment, looking around the grand foyer. A sweeping staircase curved upwards, disappearing into the shadows. Portraits lined the walls, their subjects staring down with stern faces. ...
