Look inside

Stone and Seed: Chicago to Hollow Creek | The Silent Orchard

The chipped ceramic mug warmed Elara’s hands, but did little for the cold settled deep in her bones. Chicago in November tasted like exhaust and regret. She stared out the kitchen window, watching rain slick the brick buildings across the street, each drop mirroring the ache in her chest. Six months had passed since Ben died, six months of routines built to keep the silence at bay. Those routines were now crumbling, brittle as dried leaves.

She’d known this day would come. The lawyer’s letter, crisp and official, had arrived two weeks ago. Her grandmother, June Vance, had suffered a stroke. It wasn't a small one, the doctor had said. “She’s… unresponsive. They don't know if she’ll recover.” Then came the talk of settling the estate. The orchard. Hollow Creek. A place she hadn’t seen in twenty years.

Elara turned from the window, the mug suddenly heavy. She packed, not clothes or keepsakes, but practical things. Sturdy boots. Work gloves. A flashlight. This wasn’t a trip for remembering. It was a task. A closing of accounts.

The apartment felt smaller with each box she filled. Ben’s absence was a hollow space, a constant, dull pressure. He hadn’t understood her avoidance of Hollow Creek, hadn’t understood how her grandmother’s stern face and the endless rows of apple trees had filled her childhood with a quiet dread. He’d tried, gently asking about her mother, Merry, who had left when Elara was ten.

“You can’t keep running from it, Elara,” he’d said once, holding her close. “Those roots are part of you, whether you like it or not.”

She hadn’t wanted to listen. She’d built a life here, in the clean lines of Chicago architecture, a world away from the muddy hills and tangled branches of Appalachia. A world where things seemed to make sense. Or at least, pretended to.

She found a photograph tucked inside a box of books. Ben, laughing, his arm around her on a rooftop overlooking the city. His eyes, warm and full of mischief. A sharp pain twisted in her chest. She squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back tears. This trip wasn’t about her grief. It was about June. And the orchard. And whatever waited for her in Hollow Creek.

Her neighbor, Mrs. Petrovich, shuffled into the kitchen while Elara taped up a box labeled “Kitchen, Fragile.”

“Leaving, dear?” she asked, her voice raspy with age.

“Just for a bit, Mrs. Petrovich,” Elara said, managing a weak smile. “Family business.”

The older woman’s eyes, sharp and knowing, lingered on Elara’s face. “Family is…complicated, isn’t it?”

Elara offered a noncommittal hum. Mrs. Petrovich had known Ben, had brought them soup when he was sick, had offered a quiet comfort Elara hadn’t realized she’d needed. Now, she just wanted to get this over with.

“You be careful going back to those mountains,” Mrs. Petrovich said, her voice lowering. “They hold onto things. Secrets, mostly.”

Elara laughed, a short, brittle sound. “I’m an architect, Mrs. Petrovich, not a ghost hunter.”

“Architects build with stone and steel,” the woman said, her gaze unwavering. “But sometimes, it’s the things you don't build that matter most.”

Elara felt a prickle of unease. Mrs. Petrovich was a strange woman, full of old-world wisdom. But her words touched a truth Elara couldn't ignore. The mountains did hold onto things. And she was about to walk right into the heart of it.

The drive south was a blur of gray landscapes and endless highways. She’d traded the city’s energy for the hum of the engine, but the silence inside the car was deafening. She’d downloaded classical music, hoping to soothe her frayed nerves, but even Bach couldn’t penetrate the wall of grief and apprehension.

She stopped for gas in a small Virginia town, the air thick with pine and damp earth. The cashier, a young man with tired ...
