Book description
Mabel hung up her apron years ago. She still knows how to read a room, though, and in a village the size of Lavender Lane, that turns out to be a very useful skill.
It's the day of the Lavender Festival. The bunting is up, the whole village is out, and then a treasured heirloom disappears. Detective Davies arrives to handle things officially, but Mabel has something he doesn't: a lifetime of knowing everyone on the lane, who talks, who keeps quiet and who has been acting just a little bit odd. Following the crumbs takes her through the village gossip, a pantry with more in it than flour, a peculiar collection belonging to someone called Hemlock and a stretch of local history some neighbors would rather leave alone.
This is a gentle mystery, more puzzle than peril. There are red herrings, friendly faces and a satisfying reveal, and the story unfolds at an unhurried pace, so you can read a chapter with your afternoon tea and pick it straight back up the next day.
The text is set in large print, which makes for comfortable reading if small type has started to feel like hard work. A handful of illustrations sit alongside the story.

Look inside
A Village Awakening: Lavender and Lemon
Lavender Lane was a ribbon of delight, unfurling through the Cotswolds hills like a gentle smile. Stone cottages, each one different, lined the road, their roofs softened by creeping ivy and overflowing window boxes. Every garden seemed to be competing for the title of ‘most charming,’ with roses climbing trellises, foxgloves reaching for the sky, and, of course, lavender, everywhere lavender. It wasn’t just a color here; it was a scent, a feeling, a promise of peace. The air itself seemed to hum with the buzz of bees happily lost in the fragrant blooms.
Agnes Plumtree often said that Lavender Lane wasn’t simply a place, it was a balm for the soul. She'd lived here for nearly forty years, and in that time, she'd seen seasons change, families grow, and the village evolve, yet somehow remain eternally, wonderfully the same. It was a place where everyone knew everyone else’s business, but in a kind, caring way. A place where a cup of tea could solve almost any problem, and a freshly baked treat could mend almost any heart.
Agnes paused on the lane, breathing deeply. Even after retiring from Plumtree’s Pantry, her bakery, she made a point of walking this route every morning. It grounded her, reminded her of the life she’d built, and filled her with a quiet contentment. Retirement hadn't been quite what she expected. She'd imagined long afternoons lost in books, perhaps a bit of travel. Instead, she found herself…restless. A little adrift. She missed the bustle of the bakery, the friendly chatter, the satisfaction of creating something delicious that brought joy to others.
The aroma of warm sugar and melting butter spilled out of Plumtree’s Pantry, a fragrant welcome to anyone strolling along Lavender Lane. Agnes, though retired from full-time baking, still spent most mornings in her cozy shop, not to work exactly, but to oversee things, to chat with the villagers, and, truthfully, to feel useful. This morning, the shop was buzzing with pre-festival activity.
Bea Finch, her best friend and the current proprietor of the Pantry, moved with a practiced grace behind the counter, deftly frosting a batch of miniature lemon cakes. Bea’s hands, nimble despite their age, swirled the icing into perfect rosettes. "Morning, Agnes," she called, her voice a cheerful alto. "Another beautiful day, isn’t it? Though I suspect we’ll be busier than bees in a lavender field before lunchtime."
“Indeed,” Agnes replied, adjusting a display of lavender shortbread. The shortbread, a Plumtree’s Pantry signature, was delicate and crumbly, infused with just the right amount of floral sweetness. “The Harvest Festival always brings a flurry of activity. Are you prepared for the crowds, Bea?”
Bea chuckled, wiping a smudge of icing from her cheek. “As prepared as I’ll ever be. I’ve got young Thomas helping with the washing up, and Mrs. Higgins promised to keep an eye on the till. Though, between you and me, I think she’s more interested in the gossip than the money.”
Agnes smiled. Mrs. Higgins, the village’s self-appointed news correspondent, had a knack for knowing everything that was happening, and embellishing it just a little. “She means well,” Agnes said, defending their neighbor. “She just likes to keep everyone informed.”
“Informed and entertained,” Bea corrected with a wink. "Speaking of informed, have you heard Penelope Ainsworth is planning something extraordinary for the flower show? Apparently, she's imported some rare orchids from…well, she wouldn't say where, just that they were frightfully expensive.”
Agnes raised an eyebrow. Penelope Ainsworth was a newcomer to Meadowbrook, a wealthy socialite who had purchased the old Manor House just last year. She was… flamboyant, to put it mildly. “Extraordinary, you say? I suspect ‘extraordinary’ is Penelope’s default setting.”
The sound of a car horn interrupted their conversation. A sleek, silver vehicle pulled up outside the shop, and Penelope Ainsworth emerged, a vision in a bright floral dress ...
