Book description

Open in your browser right now: LLC formation, a logo maker, 'fifty business ideas for beginners' and a web host. Months of research, and the revenue so far is zero.

Zero to First Customer flips the usual order. You don't register, build or spend until a real person has said they want what you're offering. First you mine your own skills and experience for raw material, then use the Idea Scorecard to settle on one offer. You validate demand with free methods, set a price with plain arithmetic, and reach your first 100 prospects with word-for-word outreach scripts. Then you close, deliver and collect. Only once money has arrived do you handle the legal and admin setup, all tied together by a day-by-day 30-day plan.

Look inside

Part 1, Unlearning the Bad Advice and Finding Your Raw Material

The Overwhelm is Normal

You want to start a business. That’s great. But if you’re like most people opening this book, you’re probably stuck. Not because you lack skills, but because you’re drowning in advice before you’ve even identified what to sell. LLCs, logos, marketing funnels, social media strategy… it feels like you need to solve everything at once, and it’s paralyzing. You see success stories, but they feel like they happened to other people, in another world. This book is different. We’re skipping all that. We’re starting with the absolute minimum: getting someone to give you money for something you offer. Everything else comes after.

Why Most First Businesses Die Before They Start

Most new businesses fail, not because they have bad ideas, but because they make one of five fatal mistakes early on. Let’s lay these out so you can avoid them.

  1. Building Before Selling: The biggest killer. You spend weeks, months, even years perfecting a product or service, only to discover nobody wants it. This happens because you assumed demand instead of proving it. We’ll focus on proving demand for free before you build anything.
  2. Legal Setup First: You’ve been told you need an LLC, business license, and a fancy legal disclaimer before you make a penny. This is backwards. Legal stuff costs money, and money is precious when you're starting out. We'll address legalities after you’ve made your first sale.
  3. Chasing Passion with No Market: “Do what you love!” sounds good, but it’s terrible advice if nobody will pay for it. Being passionate about underwater basket weaving is fantastic, but if there are no buyers, it's a hobby, not a business. We’ll find the overlap between your skills, a real problem, and people willing to pay to solve it.
  4. Copying Saturated Ideas: Everyone thinks they can “disrupt” a huge market with a slightly better version of something that already exists. This is a recipe for getting lost in the noise. We'll focus on finding smaller, underserved niches where you can quickly gain traction.
  5. Waiting for the Perfect Idea: The “perfect” idea doesn’t exist. The pursuit of perfection leads to analysis paralysis. You'll end up overthinking and never launching. We're going to generate lots of ideas, score them, and pick one to test.

These mistakes all share a common thread: they involve investing time, money, or effort before knowing if anyone actually wants what you’re offering.

The Revenue-First Order

We’re going to do things differently. We’re adopting what I call the Revenue-First Order. It’s simple:

  1. Sell: Get someone to pay you for something.
  2. Build: Create a repeatable process to deliver what you promised.
  3. Legalize: Only then, address legal and administrative concerns.

This isn’t just a philosophical preference; it’s the fastest, cheapest, and least stressful way to start a business. It minimizes risk and maximizes learning.

Your Raw Material: Skills, Problems, and Reach

Forget “ideas” for a moment. Think of yourself as having raw materials. These materials are:

  • Skills: What are you good at? This isn't just your job title. Think broader. Can you write clearly? Are you good at organizing things? Can you explain complex topics simply? Have you successfully solved a problem repeatedly in your life?
  • Problems: What problems have you seen others struggle with? This could be in your professional life, within your hobbies, or even in everyday conversations. What do people complain about? What tasks do they dread?
  • Reach: Who do you already have access to? This isn’t about having a huge network. It’s about who you can realistically contact without a warm introduction. Think former colleagues, people in online communities you’re part of, or even acquaintances.

Your business will be born from the intersection of these three areas.

Example: Let’s say you’re good at Excel (Skill). You’ve noticed small business owners struggle with tracking expenses (Problem). And you’re ...
