Book description
Leo builds code. Maya cracks puzzles. Their biggest worry used to be beating level seven in Aethelgard, the online game they love. Now, glitches are appearing outside the screen, scrambled data, flickering lights, and unsettling errors. Something’s wrong, and it’s spreading.
Teaming up with Kai, a surprising new ally, Leo and Maya follow a trail of digital breadcrumbs. They’ll need every bit of their skill to decipher encrypted messages, track down hidden clues, and venture into the darker corners of the internet. But as they get closer to the truth, they discover a conspiracy that’s far bigger than a game, and it’s happening now.

Vanishing Point
The crimson light of the Aethelgard sky pulsed around me, reflecting off the polished steel of my virtual armor. Okay, focus. Three frost giants, a shadow wraith, and a seriously grumpy rock golem. Child's play. Really.
My fingers flew across the keyboard, a blur of practiced motion. ‘Knightmare,’ my in-game name, was known throughout the realm for two things: impossibly fast reflexes and an encyclopedic knowledge of Aethelgard’s code. It wasn’t about brute force, though some players thought so. It was about knowing the game better than anyone else. Exploiting glitches, predicting enemy movements, mastering the hidden combinations.
I triggered ‘Frost Nova,’ freezing two of the giants solid. A quick shift to ‘Shadow Strike’ and the wraith dissolved into black pixels. The golem was tougher. It lumbered forward, raising a stone fist the size of a small car. Time to go deep.
I activated a rarely used skill, a sequence I’d discovered months ago by dissecting the game’s update files. It bypassed the golem’s armor, targeting a weak point in its core programming. A cascade of damage numbers erupted on the screen. The golem shuddered, cracked, and crumbled into dust.
“Showoff,” a voice crackled through my headset.
I didn’t even bother looking at the player list. Maya. She knew my tactics inside and out, mostly because I’d accidentally explained them to her during one of our rare voice chats. “Just efficient,” I typed back, my fingers already moving to loot the wreckage. “Someone has to keep the realm safe from digital monsters.”
“Or maybe you just like breaking things,” she retorted.
I shrugged, even though she couldn’t see me. “There’s a certain satisfaction to it. Order from chaos, you know?”
“You’re weird, Leo,” Maya said, but there was a laugh in her voice. “Seriously.”
I ignored her. I was too focused on the rare ‘Dragon Scale’ that had dropped from the golem. Perfect. I needed three more to complete the ‘Aegis of Immortality’ armor set. It wasn’t about becoming invincible, though that was a nice side effect. It was about the challenge. Unlocking the full potential of Aethelgard. It was a puzzle, a giant, beautiful, code-based puzzle, and I was determined to solve it.
The victory music swelled, a soaring orchestral piece that always managed to lift my spirits. Usually. Tonight, it felt…flat. I glanced at the server status bar. Aethelgard was incredibly popular. Thousands of players online, spread across its vast, detailed world. It was a community, a place to escape, to build, to be someone else.
And it was created by Arthur Finch.
Arthur was a legend. A recluse, sure, but a genius. He’d single-handedly designed and coded Aethelgard, pouring his heart and soul into every pixel, every line of dialogue, every hidden quest. He rarely interacted with the player base, preferring to observe from the shadows. He’d pop up occasionally on the forums, offering cryptic advice or a hint about a particularly difficult puzzle. I’d tried contacting him directly a few times, sending detailed analyses of the game’s code, hoping for a response. Nothing.
But now… nothing was an understatement.
I checked the official Aethelgard forums again. Still the same message, plastered across the top of every page: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Aethelgard servers are currently undergoing maintenance. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
That message had been up for twelve hours. Twelve hours of escalating rumors and frantic speculation. Twelve hours of a growing, unsettling feeling in my gut. Arthur never took the servers down for maintenance without announcing it well in advance. He was meticulous, a perfectionist. This wasn’t maintenance. This was something else.
I scanned the comment section. The usual mix of impatient gamers and conspiracy theorists.
“Definitely hackers!” one user posted.
“Maybe he finally got bored and abandoned the game,” another said.
“I heard he won the lottery and is living on a beach somewhere,” a third chimed in.
I ...
