Look inside
Dust and Lavender: Arrival | First Impressions
The chipped ceramic mug warmed Eliza’s hands, but did little for the chill that had settled deep in her bones. Even the strong coffee couldn't quite cut through the taste of goodbye. She stared out the diner window, watching the last of her life in Boston disappear in the rearview mirror of the bus. Liam, her fiancé, was a blurry shape waving from the platform, growing smaller with every mile. Or, she amended grimly, was her fiancé.
It wasn’t a dramatic scene. No shouting, no accusations, just a quiet unraveling. A slow realization that the man she thought she knew didn’t actually see her anymore. He saw a wife, a hostess, someone to fit neatly into the life he’d already built. She, apparently, had aspirations beyond that. Aspirations he didn’t bother to understand.
The bus lurched, jostling her coffee. She gripped the mug tighter. She’d packed light. A suitcase of clothes, a box of books, her grandmother’s antique sewing kit. And a hollow ache where hope used to be.
“Rough morning?” a voice asked.
Eliza glanced up. A woman with kind eyes and a floral apron stood beside her booth. “You could say that,” Eliza replied, managing a small smile.
“Long ride ahead. Coffee’s on the house. You look like you need it.” The woman refilled her mug, her touch surprisingly gentle. “Heading far?”
“Maine. A little town called Havenwood.”
“Havenwood! Oh, you’re going to love it. It’s… different. Quiet. Full of characters.” The woman winked. “My name is Dot, by the way.”
“Eliza.”
“Well, Eliza, you picked a good place to start over. Though, if you ask me, starting over is overrated. Best to just keep moving forward.” Dot chuckled. “Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need.”
Eliza wished she felt so optimistic. This wasn’t just a change of scenery. It was an escape. A retreat. A desperate attempt to piece herself back together.
Her grandmother, Nana Rose, had left her the inn in Havenwood. Eliza hadn't even known Nana Rose had an inn. They hadn’t been close. Nana Rose had been a bit of a wanderer, a free spirit, while Eliza had always been the responsible one. But the inn, The Lavender Lane Inn, was now hers. And along with it, a chance to disappear. To shed the life that had suffocated her and build something new. Or, at least, to hide from the wreckage of the old one.
The bus wound its way through rolling hills, the landscape slowly shifting from bustling cityscapes to dense forests and rocky coastline. Eliza pressed her forehead against the cool glass, watching the scenery blur. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed the smell of pine and salt air. Boston, for all its charm, had always felt…contained. Here, the air felt wide open, promising something different.
She pulled out a worn photograph from her bag. Nana Rose, young and vibrant, stood in front of a grand Victorian house, lavender bushes spilling over the porch. The house looked…magical. A world away from the sleek, modern condo she'd shared with Liam.
“Quite a place, that Lavender Lane Inn,” the bus driver announced, his voice booming through the speakers. “Been empty for years. Locals say it’s seen better days.”
Eliza’s stomach tightened. She knew it wouldn’t be a fairytale restoration. The lawyer handling the estate had been… tactful, let’s say. “Needs work,” he’d said. “Significant work.” She’d seen the photos. Peeling paint, a sagging porch, overgrown gardens. It was a disaster.
But it was her disaster. And somehow, that made it feel…right.
The bus pulled into Havenwood just as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the quaint town. It was exactly as Dot had described: charming, quiet, and…odd. Antique shops lined the main street, overflowing with forgotten treasures. Lavender farms stretched out towards the sea, their purple blooms swaying in the breeze. ...
