Look inside

Dust and Shadows

The late afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows of the Havenwood Library, casting golden stripes across the polished wood floor. Dust danced in the light, a quiet show Eleanor Swift had seen many times. It was a peaceful place, one she’d always loved. Even now, months into retirement, the library felt more like home than her cozy cottage on Maple Street.

She wasn’t officially working anymore, of course. Mrs. Peterson, the new head librarian, was perfectly capable. But Eleanor found it hard to stay away. She volunteered a few afternoons a week, helping to sort older books. It kept her mind busy, and it meant she could be surrounded by books. Books were, simply, the best company.

Today, though, even the familiar scent of aged paper and leather couldn’t quite lift her spirits. A quiet restlessness had settled over her. Retirement hadn’t been the adventure she’d expected. She’d imagined travel, a painting class, new hobbies. Instead, she felt…adrift. Bea Ainsworth, her friend since childhood, kept suggesting the senior center’s knitting group. Eleanor appreciated the thought, but she preferred the company of characters bound in cloth and ink.

She ran a finger along the spine of Little Women, a familiar comfort. Sixty-eight years. A good long life. But lately, it felt a little…empty.

The bell above the library door chimed, announcing a visitor. Eleanor glanced up, expecting Mrs. Gable, who came every Tuesday to research her family history. It wasn’t Mrs. Gable.

A man stood in the doorway, shaking raindrops from his coat. He was tall, with a rugged look that suggested he spent time outdoors. He didn’t quite seem to fit in Havenwood, a town that valued calm and predictability.

“Can I help you?” Eleanor asked, her voice regaining its usual clarity.

“I’m Detective Inspector Harding,” he said, showing a badge. “Just arrived. Looking for someone in charge.”

“Mrs. Peterson is at a conference today,” Eleanor replied. “I’m Eleanor Swift. I used to be the head librarian here. I volunteer a few afternoons.”

Harding’s gaze swept over the room, taking in the high shelves and quiet atmosphere. “Right. Well, Mrs. Swift, I’m afraid there’s been…a problem.”

Eleanor’s brow furrowed. Havenwood rarely had problems. Misplaced books, maybe. A disagreement over a parking spot. But nothing truly serious.

“What kind of problem?”

“Arthur Finch, the antique dealer, was found dead this morning. In the rare book room.”

The words hung in the air, unexpected and heavy. Eleanor felt a chill despite the warmth of the room. Arthur Finch. She’d known him for years. He was a pleasant man, always fair when buying donated books. A bit of a loner, perhaps, but harmless.

“Arthur? Dead? That’s…awful.”

“Indeed,” Harding said grimly. “We’re treating it as a homicide.”

Eleanor felt a prickle of unease. “Homicide? In Havenwood?”

“It seems Mr. Finch was killed during a robbery. Several rare books are missing.” Harding walked further into the library, his eyes scanning the room. “We’re just trying to understand what happened.”

He led her towards the rare book room, a small, secluded space at the back of the library. It had been Eleanor’s sanctuary when she was head librarian. The air was always cooler, and the scent of old paper was strong.

A uniformed officer stood guard at the door, stepping aside as Harding approached. Eleanor followed, her heart beating a slow, heavy rhythm. The sight that greeted her was…disturbing.

The room was in disarray. Books lay scattered on the floor, their covers torn. A small table had been knocked over. And in the center of it all, lying amidst the chaos, was Arthur Finch.

Eleanor quickly looked away. She’d seen death before, of course. Havenwood wasn’t immune to life’s natural end. But this was different. This was violent, unexpected, and deeply upsetting.

Harding was already examining the scene, his face impassive. “Looks like a struggle,” he said, pointing to ...
