Book description
Wren believed she knew Leo. He was the star gamer, the quick-witted friend, a constant in her online world. Then, one day, he was simply gone. No goodbye, no explanation. Just a complete disappearance from every platform he used.
This isn’t a simple case of someone wanting to be alone. It’s a ghost in the system, and Wren is determined to find him. Her search pulls her into the hidden corners of the internet, anonymous forums, forgotten accounts, where identities shift and danger hides behind every profile.
Uncovering a network of online rivalries and concealed motives, Wren begins to suspect Leo was involved in something far more dangerous than she imagined. Was he a victim, or did he have secrets of his own? And how far will someone go to keep those secrets buried?

Look inside
Disconnect: Loading Screen | Ghost in the Machine
The blue light of the screen painted my bedroom in shades of electric. 2:47 AM. Don’t judge. Sleep is…optional when you’re chasing ghosts. Real ones, digital ones, doesn’t matter. They all leave traces.
I, Maya Sharma, Nyx online, because let’s be real, my parents are not cool enough for ‘Maya’, was currently elbow-deep in the dark web. Not for anything illegal, Mom, relax. Just…research. My current obsession? Cold cases. Unsolved disappearances. Stuff the cops gave up on. Easier to find answers when people aren't actively trying to hide things, ya know?
Tonight’s rabbit hole: the Vanishing of Old Man Hemlock. Seriously, that was his username. A total boomer who apparently ran a weird little forum about antique clocks back in the early 2000s. The forum’s been offline for years, but the internet never forgets. I was trying to pull archived posts, anything that might explain why this guy just…stopped.
“Ugh,” I muttered, clicking through broken links. “This is like digital archaeology. So much wasted time.”
My fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing firewalls and scraping data. I’m good at this. Like, really good. I can crack a system before you finish typing your password. It’s a skill. Don’t ask where I learned it. Let’s just say curiosity and a lot of free time are a dangerous combo.
A notification pinged on Discord. Leo. Of course. He’s the reason I even bother with, like, people sometimes.
Leo [2:48 AM]: Nyx you up? Huge drama in Aethelgard. You will NOT believe this.
I sighed dramatically, minimizing the clock forum. Aethelgard. My guilty pleasure. It’s an MMORPG, massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Think swords and sorcery, dragons and dungeons. I’m not usually into fantasy, but the coding is ridiculously complex. It’s a playground for someone like me.
Nyx [2:49 AM]: Let me guess. Someone’s camping the noob zone again? Groundbreaking.
Leo [2:49 AM]: No! Ethan's gone. Like, completely gone. He hasn’t logged in for almost 24 hours.
Ethan. Valkyrie in Aethelgard. One of the best players on the server. A total legend. And also, a friend. A really good friend. He’s…always online. Always. This was weird.
Nyx [2:50 AM]: Gone? What do you mean gone? Maybe his internet’s down?
Leo [2:50 AM]: He’s not answering texts. Or DMs. Or anything. And…this is the really freaky part. He left something behind. In the game.
I switched tabs, firing up Aethelgard. The graphics loaded, throwing me into the sprawling world of Eldoria. I customized my avatar, a shadowy rogue named Nyx, naturally, and teleported to the main city, Silverhaven. Leo was already waiting, his character, a hulking warrior, looking genuinely worried.
“See?” he said, gesturing to a small, unassuming shop in the marketplace. “He left a note…or, like, a puzzle? It’s just a bunch of symbols and numbers plastered all over the shop window.”
I approached the shop, my avatar navigating through the bustling crowd. He wasn’t wrong. The window was covered in strange glyphs, glowing faintly. It looked less like a message and more like someone had vomited hexadecimal code.
“What the heck is this?” I muttered, pulling up my character’s in-game notepad. I started copying down the symbols, my brain automatically translating them into binary.
“He's obsessed with puzzles,” Leo explained. “Always leaving little riddles for people to solve. But this…this feels different. Darker.”
Samir, or Zero as he’s known in-game, appeared beside us, his nimble assassin character slicing through the air with a practice swing. He’s the competitive type. Always has to be the best. It’s exhausting.
“Seriously? You guys are wasting time with this nonsense?” Zero scoffed. “Probably just logged off to rage quit after a bad raid. Ethan does that all the time.”
“He wouldn't just disappear, Zero,” Leo argued, his voice tight with concern. “And he’d tell us if he was quitting.”
“Look, I’ve been analyzing the glyphs,” I said, cutting them off. ...
