Book description

Do you ever feel most uneasy when utterly alone?

The Watcher’s Journal introduces Hemlock, a man tasked with tending the beacon on a lonely stretch of coastline. He expects solitude, but finds himself haunted by more than just the sea. A hidden journal detailing the experiences of a previous keeper stirs unsettling questions, and soon, Hemlock begins to suspect he isn’t alone in the tower.

This is a story built on atmosphere, on the slow creep of dread. It's about the unraveling of a mind, the weight of silence, and the terrifying possibility that the most frightening monsters reside within ourselves. As Hemlock investigates the lighthouse’s history, strange occurrences escalate, shadows flicker, sounds echo, and his grip on reality begins to loosen.

The deeper he goes, the more fragmented his thoughts become. Can he uncover the truth before the darkness consumes him, or will the lighthouse claim another victim?

Look inside

The Beacon's Embrace: Arrival

The carriage wheels bumped along the rutted track, each turn a small hardship. Days had blurred into a gray line of fields and stunted trees, the landscape growing steadily more…unyielding. Not hostile, exactly. Simply unwilling to give way. I’d chosen this place, of course. Searched it out. But even I hadn’t expected such complete isolation.

My hand, cramped from holding the leather strap, traced the shape of the sketchpad on my lap. Blank pages. A hollow emptiness mirroring the one inside me since…since Sarah and little Thomas were gone. I hadn’t drawn in months. The colors felt brittle, the lines lifeless. I’d hoped distance, a change of scenery, might bring back my creativity. A foolish hope, maybe.

Old Man Hemlock, the agency man, had warned me the road was rough. “Remote,” he’d said with a tight smile. “Truly remote.” He’d downplayed it. The final stretch was barely a path hugging the cliff edge, the sea a dark drop below. Each jolt of the carriage felt like a step toward the world’s end. Or perhaps, a step away from it. That was the goal, wasn’t it? To disappear.

The first glimpse of the lighthouse took my breath. It wasn’t the tall, perfect beacon I’d seen in pictures. It was…older. Weathered. The stone, a dark gray, was stained with salt and storms. It rose from a small, rocky island, a jagged tooth against the bruised November sky.

The house, joined to the lighthouse by a narrow causeway, was equally imposing. A large, rectangular building of the same dark stone, it held a certain faded beauty. Many windows were boarded, and ivy, thick and relentless, covered the walls, hiding carvings. It didn’t seem welcoming. It seemed…observed.

The driver, a weathered man named Silas who hadn’t said much the whole trip, pulled up the horses. “This is it, sir.” His voice was rough, like stones rubbing together.

“It’s…bigger than I thought.” I forced a smile, trying to feel lighter than I did.

Silas grunted. “Aye. Built to last. And seen a lot, too.” He didn’t say more. The place held stories. Stories I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear.

He began unloading my trunk and a smaller case with my art supplies. The air smelled of salt, damp stone, and something else. Something…floral? Faint, almost lost, but there. A strange scent in this bleak place.

“The key’s with the caretaker. Old Maggie. Lives in the village. She’ll have it for you. Though I wouldn’t count on her remembering much these days.” Silas tossed me a small, tarnished key. “Good luck to you, sir.”

And with that, he turned the horses around, leaving me alone with the looming presence of Hemlock House.

The causeway was slick with seaweed and unsteady underfoot. Each step echoed loudly in the quiet. The door, a heavy oak reinforced with iron, groaned as I pushed it open.

The inside was dim and cold. Dust motes danced in the light from the dirty windows. The air smelled of disuse and decay. A grand staircase, its wood now dull and cracked, filled the entrance hall. To my left, a large room looked like a former drawing room. To my right, a long, dark hallway disappeared into the house.

It was…empty. Completely, deeply empty. Not just of people, but of warmth, of life. A place where memories came to an end.

I dropped my small case and ran my hand along the cold stone wall. It felt strangely smooth, polished in places, as if many hands had touched it before mine. A slight tremor ran through the stone. I dismissed it as my imagination.

A voice, startlingly close, broke the silence.

“Looking for something, are you?”

I spun around, my heart leaping. An old woman stood in the doorway to the drawing room, her figure lost in shadow. She was small and bent, her face a web ...
