Book description
If you’re drawn to places that remember, to the quiet dread of isolation, this story is for you. Thomas arrives on Hemlock Island seeking solitude, taking the keeper’s post at the aging lighthouse. He finds a place steeped in silence, and a growing suspicion that he isn’t alone.
His journal becomes a haunting record of unsettling discoveries: fragments of past keepers’ lives, local lore, and the lingering memory of a woman lost to the sea, Sarah. The island breathes around him, and Thomas begins to question his sanity as the line between what’s real and what isn’t starts to fade.

Look inside
The Stone and the Sea: Arrival
The salt spray tasted of loss. It coated my lips, a constant film even after I turned my face. Three days at sea, and the taste hadn’t lessened, hadn’t washed away. Maybe it never would. It felt… fitting.
The Northern Star pitched and rolled, a tired ship on a bruised grey ocean. I stood at the rail, the wind tearing at my coat, and watched the Maine coastline grow slowly from the mist. It wasn’t a welcoming sight. Jagged rocks, trees clinging to cliffs, and a sky heavy with the threat of rain. Blackwood Isle. Even the name felt like a warning.
Old Man Hemlock, the man I was replacing, had sent a short letter. “The island… it gets inside you.” I’d thought it the rambling of a lonely man. Now, I wasn’t so sure. There was a weight to this place, even from a distance. A stillness that wasn’t peace, but something… waiting.
I’d wanted this isolation. Needed it. After the accident, after… everything, the city had become unbearable. Each street corner held a memory, each face a ghost of what I’d lost. Sarah’s laughter. Our son, Thomas, reaching for a balloon. They were everywhere, and nowhere.
The lighthouse. It was a simple solution, really. A job. A remote post. A place to be alone with my grief, to let the sea and the silence surround me. A foolish idea, perhaps. But I was past caring about foolish.
Captain Pike, a man built like a weathered buoy, found me at the rail. He hadn’t spoken much during the voyage, letting the sea do the talking. He offered a grunt, a kind of greeting.
“Blackwood, eh?” he said, his voice rough from salt and wind. “Haven’t seen anyone ask for that posting in a long time.”
“It suits me,” I replied, keeping my voice steady. I didn’t want to explain why it suited me. Didn't want to talk about the hole in my life, the emptiness with every wave.
“Hemlock was a strange one,” Pike continued, ignoring my silence. “Kept to himself. Collected… things. Said the island spoke to him.”
“Spoke?”
“Aye. Stories, mostly. Old tales. Something about a sea goddess and offerings. The locals whisper. Best not to listen.” He paused, studying me with eyes that had seen too much. “That lighthouse has a history. More than a few keepers have vanished over the years.”
“Vanished?” I asked, a knot tightening in my stomach.
“Disappeared. Gone without a trace. They say ‘lost at sea’ or ‘drowned’. But Blackwood… it keeps secrets.”
He spat over the side. “Just keep the light shining, mister. That’s all anyone asks.”
The Northern Star dropped anchor in a small cove. Blackwood Isle rose before us, a dark mass of rock and scrub. The lighthouse, a towering Victorian structure of grey stone, dominated the land. It looked less like a beacon and more like a lonely guard, watching over something old and unwelcome.
A small dinghy was lowered, and I climbed in with my few belongings. Old Man Hemlock was waiting on the rocky shore, a bent figure against the grey sky. He looked… smaller than I’d imagined. His face was lined, and his eyes held a haunted look.
He didn’t offer a hand. Didn’t offer a greeting. Just pointed towards the winding path to the lighthouse.
“Your supplies are unloaded,” he said, his voice raspy. “The keys are inside the door. I won’t stay to explain. There’s nothing to explain.”
I felt a chill despite my coat. It wasn't the cold of the sea. It was something else. A sense of… fear.
“Is everything in order?” I asked, forcing myself to look at him.
He gave a short, humorless laugh. “Order? There hasn’t been order on this island for a long time. Just… be careful. And don’t listen to the whispers.”
Then, without another word, he turned and ...
