Book description

Wren believed she’d left the weight of Cypress Bend behind, but a sudden call home pulls her back to the Mississippi Delta. The family plantation, once a proud landmark, now stands draped in shadows and whispers. She expects to find answers, but what she uncovers is a legacy of silence, stretching back generations.

This is a story for readers who love character-driven fiction, exploring the complicated bonds of family and the way a place can shape those who inhabit it. Wren’s search for truth leads her through forgotten rooms and into the heart of the swamp, where the past refuses to stay buried.

Look inside

Dust and Echoes: The Return

The blacktop surrendered to gravel as she turned off the highway, the transition a rough exhale. Cypress Bend wasn’t a place you stumbled upon. It demanded a decision, a deliberate turn away from progress, a yielding to the pull of something older, something…slower. The car, a silver sedan too sleek for this stretch of road, bumped along the lane, dust blooming in its wake like disturbed ghosts.

Fields stretched on either side, mostly fallow now, the ghosts of cotton rows visible only to a practiced eye. Patches of wildflowers stubbornly clung to life along the ditches, splashes of purple and yellow against the muted greens and browns. It wasn’t the manicured beauty of the landscapes she was used to in Chicago. This was a wildness, a resilience born of struggle. A beauty that felt earned.

The air, thick and heavy with humidity, tasted of river and earth. It pressed against her skin, a damp weight she hadn’t realized she’d forgotten. She lowered the window, letting the scent fill the car, a scent that stirred something vaguely familiar, a half-remembered dream. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant, but it carried a sadness, a sense of things lost.

Then she saw it. Cypress Bend.

It wasn’t what she expected. The photographs Mama Eula had occasionally sent over the years hadn’t captured the sheer scale of the place, nor the extent of its decay. The house, a grand antebellum structure of white columns and weathered wood, stood on a slight rise overlooking the muddy curve of the river. But the paint peeled like sunburnt skin. Several columns leaned at precarious angles. The roof sagged in places, and vines, thick as pythons, climbed the walls, slowly reclaiming the house for the land.

It wasn’t ruined, not yet. But it was…tired. As if it carried the weight of every story ever told within its walls, every joy and sorrow, every secret and lie.

Eleanor stopped the car at the foot of the long, shell-strewn driveway. She sat for a moment, just looking, letting the house settle into her vision. It felt less like a homecoming and more like an intrusion. She hadn't been back in nearly twenty years. Not since…well, not since she’d found a reason to leave.

She hadn’t thought much about Cypress Bend in all that time. It had become a faded photograph in the album of her memory, a place she acknowledged but rarely revisited. Now, here it was, solid and real, demanding her attention. Demanding something she wasn’t sure she was willing to give.

She put the car in park, killed the engine, and sat in silence. The only sounds were the drone of insects and the distant rush of the river.

She needed to get this over with. Settle the estate. Sell the property. Return to her life in Chicago. To the clean lines of her buildings, the predictable rhythm of her days, the carefully constructed distance between herself and anything that might cause her pain.

Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped out. The gravel crunched under her feet. She reached for her suitcase, a sleek black roller bag that felt absurdly out of place.

The front door, a massive oak affair, was unlocked. Eleanor hesitated, her hand hovering over the tarnished brass doorknob. It felt…wrong. Like she was violating some unspoken rule. But Mama Eula had always been a woman who disregarded rules. A woman who lived life on her own terms. Perhaps she wouldn't mind.

She pushed the door open.

The interior was dim and cool, a stark contrast to the humid heat outside. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom. The air smelled of old wood, mildew, and something else…something floral, like dried lavender. Mama Eula’s scent, perhaps.

The grand foyer was cavernous, with a sweeping staircase that curved gracefully towards the upper floors. A crystal chandelier ...
