Book description
Eleanor left everything behind, hoping a quiet life could mend a fractured heart. She finds Havenwood, a neglected animal sanctuary with a desperate need for care. It’s a daunting task, and she’s ill-prepared, but the animals, and the welcoming community, offer a glimmer of hope.
Havenwood isn’t just a place to heal wounded creatures, it’s a small town where everyone knows your name…and your past. As Eleanor breathes life back into the sanctuary, she uncovers hidden stories and learns that rebuilding trust requires patience, both with the animals and the people around her. A quiet connection blooms with a local craftsman, but letting go of old hurts proves more difficult than she imagined. Look inside
Dust and Echoes
The dust swirled behind the aging Volvo, a reddish-brown cloud mirroring the unsettled feeling in Elara’s chest. North Carolina. Rolling hills, green and lush, a stark contrast to the gray she’d left behind. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed green. Or quiet. The highway narrowed, the signs becoming less frequent, until finally, a small, weathered welcome sign announced: “Havenwood. A little piece of heaven.”
Elara allowed herself a small, tired smile. Heaven felt like a stretch. But a fresh start? Maybe.
She turned onto the dirt road, the Volvo bumping and rattling. The road wasn't much more than a track, overgrown with weeds, and the trees leaned in, their branches forming a canopy overhead. It felt…isolated. Good. That was the point.
The farm appeared suddenly, a ghost of its former self. “Wildflower Haven,” the peeling sign read, the paint cracked and faded. It was bigger than the photos online, more dilapidated too. A two-story farmhouse, its porch sagging, sat at the end of a long, overgrown driveway. A barn, its roof partially collapsed, stood to the left, and a series of smaller outbuildings dotted the landscape. Fences lay broken and rusted, swallowed by weeds.
It wasn’t just neglected; it felt…sad. Like something had been lost here, a long time ago. A feeling Elara knew all too well.
She parked near the house, killed the engine, and sat for a moment, just looking. The air smelled of damp earth and something else…wildflowers, maybe? A few hardy blooms managed to push through the weeds, splashes of purple and yellow against the muted greens and browns.
She finally took a deep breath and climbed out of the car, stretching her stiff muscles. Years of city life, years of…everything, had taken their toll. She hadn’t realized how much weight she carried until she stood on this soil, felt the quiet press in around her.
“Well,” she murmured to herself, her voice raspy from the long drive. “Here we are.”
The front door creaked open with a protesting groan. The house was dark and musty inside, filled with the scent of decay. Sunlight filtered through the grimy windows, revealing layers of dust on the furniture. It would take months, years even, to restore this place.
Elara didn’t flinch. She’d faced harder things.
She walked through the living room, her footsteps echoing in the silence. A faded floral wallpaper peeled from the walls, and cobwebs draped from the ceiling. The kitchen was equally desolate, the cabinets stained and chipped, the appliances ancient.
She found a single, cracked teacup in a cupboard, and a box of tea bags tucked away in a drawer. Small comforts. She filled the chipped kettle with water and put it on the stove. A small act, but it felt…grounding.
While the water heated, Elara wandered out to the barn. The smell inside was stronger, a mix of hay, manure, and something faintly sweet. She ran a hand along the rough-hewn wood of the stalls, imagining the animals that had once lived here.
She’d always loved animals. They didn’t ask questions. They didn’t judge. They just offered unconditional affection. Something she desperately needed.
A sudden movement caught her eye. A flash of white fur disappearing behind a pile of old lumber.
“Hello?” she called out cautiously.
A small, scruffy dog emerged, tail tucked between its legs. It was a terrier mix, mostly white with patches of brown, its fur matted and dirty. It looked at her with wary, intelligent eyes.
“Hey there,” Elara said softly, kneeling down. “You’re a little one, aren’t you?”
The dog didn’t approach, but it didn’t run away either. It just watched her, its head tilted.
“Lost?” Elara asked, gently extending her hand. “Or just hiding?”
The dog hesitated, then slowly, cautiously, crept forward and sniffed her fingers. It allowed her to scratch behind its ears, its body relaxing slightly.
“Good boy,” ...
