Book description

Eliza arrives in Havenwood with more than just renovation plans. She’s back to face a past she thought she’d left behind, carrying memories and a quiet sadness. The Lavender Cottage, worn and waiting, feels like the perfect place to begin again.

Havenwood remembers Eliza, and so does Noah, a familiar face from her youth. As she brings the cottage back to life, she’s welcomed into a community offering unexpected kindness, and finds herself confronting old wounds. A slow-burning connection with Noah rekindles, unfolding amidst the scent of lavender and the rhythms of small-town life.

Can Eliza finally find peace, embrace a new beginning, and realize that sometimes, the most important restorations happen within?

Look inside

Returning Home

The Blue Ridge Mountains rose around her, a soft watercolor of greens and blues blurred by the late afternoon haze. Amelia hadn't realized how much she’d missed the way the light fell here, filtering through the trees. Or the quiet. City sounds, the constant hum of traffic, distant sirens, had become a strange sort of background noise, something she hadn’t even registered as missing until it was gone.

Now, sitting in her dusty Volvo, the engine finally silenced, all she could hear were the crickets and the whisper of wind through the leaves. It was a good quiet, a peaceful quiet. But it felt…empty.

She gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white. Havenwood. It hadn’t changed much. The same weathered storefronts lined Main Street, the same sleepy pace seemed to hang in the air. A pang of something she couldn't quite name tightened in her chest. Not exactly joy. Not exactly sadness. Something…in between.

She was here to fix a house. To fix herself, maybe. Though she wasn't sure a broken cottage in a small town could mend a broken heart.

The address Flora had given her led her down a winding lane, overgrown with weeds. The lane opened into a small clearing, and there it was. The Lavender Cottage.

It wasn't quite what she remembered. Time and neglect had taken their toll. The paint peeled like sunburnt skin, the porch sagged, and the lavender bushes, once her grandmother’s pride, were choked with weeds. A single shutter hung askew, banging gently against the wall in the breeze. It looked…tired.

Like her.

Amelia killed the engine, a cloud of dust rising around the car. She sat for a long moment, just looking. This was where she’d spent her summers as a child, helping her grandmother bake lavender shortbread, listening to stories on the porch swing. It was a place filled with good memories. But good memories couldn't change the fact that it was a mess. And so was she.

She reached for the door handle, then hesitated. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. Maybe she should have just kept driving. Sold the place. Let someone else deal with it. But the thought of letting go of the last piece of her grandmother, of abandoning this small corner of her past, felt worse than facing the daunting task ahead.

She sighed, took a deep breath, and stepped out of the car. The air smelled of damp earth and something faintly floral, a ghost of lavender clinging to the breeze. She retrieved her toolbox from the back, the weight of it oddly comforting.

“Alright,” she murmured to herself, her voice raspy from disuse. “Let’s get to work.”

The front door creaked open with a protest, revealing a dark and dusty interior. The air inside was stale and heavy, thick with the scent of decay. Sunlight struggled to penetrate the grime-covered windows, casting long, eerie shadows across the room.

Amelia flipped on a flashlight, the beam cutting through the gloom. The living room was small, with faded floral wallpaper and a fireplace filled with cobwebs. Dust motes danced in the light, swirling like tiny ghosts. It was a sad sight.

She ran a gloved hand over the mantelpiece, feeling the rough texture of the wood beneath her fingers. Her grandmother had always kept a collection of seashells here, gathered from trips to the coast. They were gone now. Probably lost or discarded years ago.

A wave of sadness washed over her, unexpectedly strong. It wasn’t just about the seashells. It was about everything. About losing her grandmother, about losing Daniel. About losing the life she thought she wanted.

She blinked back tears, refusing to let herself fall apart. She had a job to do.

She began to assess the damage, making a mental list of repairs. The floors needed to be sanded and refinished, the walls repainted, the roof repaired. ...
